Trayvon Martin, George Zimmerman, and the media

What did George Zimmerman do?

Listening to the media would lead you to believe that he was an overzealous leader of a local neighborhood watch group driving a car through his neighborhood looking for suspicious people intent upon breaking into homes in his gated community. While driving he spotted a black teenager wearing a hoodie, drinking Snapple tea, and eating skittles as he was walking down the sidewalk, he then began following the guy because he stereotyped him as a thug. Zimmerman called the 911 emergency number, reported that he was following a black kid, then set out on foot, was told to stop following him, refused, and then hunted the kid down and shot him. He was then taken to a police station where his father, a former judge, was called and used his influence, while on the phone with the police, to have him set free. The police seemingly didn’t think too much about it because these types of cases happen all the time. Only when reverend Al Sharpton got involved was anything done about this, because it had been a month since Trayvon Martin was gunned down by George Zimmerman and the police obviously had no interest in arresting him for the crime of murder, which this surely is, a blatant homicide.

I paid attention as continuing saga played out, listening to what was being said, listening to the portions of the 911 call that had been released, then the subsequent 911 calls that were made by people from the neighborhood, reading multiple articles about the event, listening to various people in interviews, official folks during press conferences, and soapboxers relay to the general public what their opinion of the situation was and is.

The only two complete stories we have from people in contact with Zimmerman are consistent with all of the evidence known to the general public at this time. Whether you believe what these people have to say doesn’t matter, they are the only versions of events available from one of the people directly involved in the shooting. The police have said that there are at least two eyewitnesses to the complete event, both of whom have been interviewed by the police and have chosen not to speak to the media.

Standard procedure when something like this happens is to detain the person involved in the shooting, look at the evidence at hand, take laws and said evidence into consideration, then make a decision as to whether or not the individual should be charged with a crime. That is exactly what the police did. Whether you believe it or not George Zimmerman was injured, the exact extent of his injuries aren’t known to the public, his appearance at the scene was consistent with his version of events, and everything said by the eyewitnesses matched what Zimmerman told the police. Taking all of this into consideration, the police then let him go free.

Zimmerman has stated, via his father and brother, that he was on his way to Target to shop for groceries, established by the police when texts Zimmerman was sending at the time were read, when he saw someone he didn’t know walking from door to door. The supposed reason Martin was doing this was to get out of the rain. When Martin saw Zimmerman he began walking down the sidewalk while talking on his cell phone to his girlfriend. Martin was to Zimmerman’s right as he walked down the sidewalk, when Martin got to a point between two buildings where the sidewalk continued straight, and also had a turn to the left, he took the left turn between the buildings away from the street, then a right turn between the next set of buildings. Zimmerman then exited the car to go to the other side of the block to give the police the number of the building he went behind, as he walked by the right hand turn he looked between the two buildings and did not see Martin. When the 911 dispatcher asked Zimmerman if he was following Martin he said yes, and was told not to do that, he replied “ok” and turned to head back to his car, as he went by the walkway Martin had gone down, they met, an altercation ensued, and Martin was shot. According to Zimmerman, Martin approached him, made a statement, attacked him, knocked him to the ground, began hitting him and banging his head into the ground. Fearing for his life Zimmerman then shot Martin. He has not said if he drew the weapon or if Martin went for the weapon and they struggled over it. The funeral director that prepped Martin’s body has stated that Martin had no injuries other than the single gunshot that killed him. This interview has been played in the media to “prove” that no altercation took place, yet what this interview shows is that Zimmerman did not injure Martin in a struggle until he shot him.

What is my opinion of the situation?

This is a horrible series of events that should have never taken place. George Zimmerman should have never gotten out of his car. When he was faced with what he considered to be a suspicious person he should’ve given the police the details, waited on them to arrive, given them another description and the last known position of the individual, then made his way on to Target to do his shopping. Had Zimmerman done this, no one would know who he and Trayvon Martin are, a seventeen year old kid would still be alive, and George Zimmerman wouldn’t be sitting in jail right now.

The peripherals of this case aren’t in question, or shouldn’t be. Whether or not Zimmerman had a gun is irrelevant, it is legal for him to carry a firearm in Florida. The Florida “stand your ground” law has no bearing here as all states have some form of self defense laws. The race of either person involved shouldn’t matter either, but it does. Zimmerman has shown, from some forty six calls during the previous couple of months to police, to be consistent in reporting any person he considers to be suspicious, regardless of race. He has been reported not to be a racist by people of several different races that know him personally. So why does race matter in this case? It was used a catalyst to launch the case into the national media and draw attention.

The law enforcement community in Florida has now backed themselves into a corner. They have taken him into custody and charged him with second degree murder, forty some odd days after the fact. There is no way they can let him go if he is found innocent during a trial. The man has a price on his head (where is the FBI?), he and his family have received constant death threats, and the media has transformed the man into a monster.

The knee jerk reaction to hearing what took place here is to “bring the man to justice”, there is simply no reason for a grown man to shoot an unarmed seventeen year old, this is just another case of a black man being killed and it being swept under the rug, the guy should have never had a gun in the first place, nobody should be killed because they had tea and skittles, vigilante justice is no justice at all…

Some or all of these tings may be true. The problem with all of this is that we do not know exactly what happened there, only through a thorough examination of the facts can this be determined. The police thought they had done this, yet the public wasn’t satisfied, so the county is seeking to appease the public outcry. My question is this…. If Zimmerman goes on trial and is found to be innocent of these charges, will the media take a portion of the blame for the violence that will be sure to follow his acquittal with the same vigor they have shown in smugly taking credit for being the reason he was arrested? Will Piers Morgan and Nancy Grace admit they were wrong? No they won’t. They will act as any other sociopath would in that position, they will double down and then lead with pictures of the riots for the next few weeks while shaking their heads and proclaiming all Florida juries to be comprised of stupid people.

The questions raised by the case should be addressed in a national forum, headed by a panel of the same people that promote the case nightly on television. A discussion of why people stereotype, why firearms are sold and handled as they are, vigilante justice, police harassment, unfair legal systems, the high cost of decent legal representation, race relations… all of these things should be discussed, openly. Yet they won’t, and these types of things will continue to happen.

Hand carved Hiking stick - Wood Spirit

Given the pattern that appeared in the grain of the last piece I used, I decided to go with dogwood for my next hiking stick. Dogwood leaves a unique grain that I love...

I took this piece from the same area as the Dragonfly walking stick. I walked about two hundred yards past the dogwood I took the Dragonfly limb from and found a perfect tree for a hiking stick. I enjoyed carving this piece, the work was calming for some reason...

Hand carved walking stick - Dragonfly

A few weeks ago I took a walk with my brother around the back of my property. We checked out a few things we haven't seen since we were kids and just enjoyed the day. On the way back down the northeastern property line he spotted a dogwood tree with an unusual limb...

I went back out there a few days later, armed with my saw, and cut the limb from the tree. Once I had shaved the bark from the piece I sat it to the side and left it to dry for a while, occasionally letting my eyes drift over toward it wondering what I should do with it. I finally decided to start working with it and just let my mind wander as I did, so I could see what image would turn up on it.

I drew on it with a pencil for a while and discovered that an image of a dragonfly had appeared, so I went with that...

Local Haunting...

One of the things that has fascinated me for my entire life is ghost stories. I am always on the prowl for local tales that are said to be true. I think I may have stumbled upon one… There was an oral tradition of this story passed along for generations until someone wrote it down several decades ago. I just finished reading that account….

Out on Fischer road in Newnan, Georgia there was once a plantation.

One of the slaves on the plantation was rumored to have had enough of the overbearing owner and rose against him one morning. Fearing for his life, he decided to take the quiet approach in unleashing his vengeance upon the hateful man and set about forming his machinations during the night when everyone was sleeping. He didn’t want anyone that worked the house to be involved, so he would climb an oak tree near the kitchen house as he watched. His job didn’t begin until an hour after daybreak, so he spent several days learning the morning routine. He had heard the people working in the kitchen talking about how the owner took his breakfast each day alone, being strict in his observance of silence within the household during this time, so he could go over the day’s plans with no interruptions.

On a foggy Tuesday morning he decided to make his move. When the servers had cleared the dishes from the table and the plantation owner took out his ledgers he knew he had about twenty minutes before anyone else entered the room. He slipped from the tree, stole across the dying grass and, by the light of a late autumn moon, silently raised the window he had been staring through for the past several mornings. Hearing the movement or feeling the air coming in, the owner spun around to see the man stepping in, he began to stand up and shout in anger, but his voice was cut short by the slave’s mad dash toward him and strong hands enclosing around his throat. The slave stared intensely into the patriarch’s eyes as he watched the man’s life slowly leave the glare of hatred being thrown back at him. Once the man’s body went limp he sat him back in his chair, leaning him over the table atop his books he seemed to care so much for. He then lowered the window and locked it in place. He was frightened and nervous as he stood by the door and listened for any movement, but heard none. He knew, through his preparations, that the house slaves were busy out in the kitchen house cleaning the dishes and getting ready to set out breakfast for the rest of the family, who would arrive shortly to spend time with the owner before he set out on the day’s labor. The guilty man spoke often of the lingering odor in the room of freshly cooked bacon and brewed coffee as he tried to control his breathing, waiting for his chance to exit down the hallway and out through the back door. Finally he heard the call of the head cook to the servers to come and get the rest of the food. Taking advantage of everyone’s diverted attention, he slipped through the door and into the darkness. When the alarm began to rise letting the area know something terrible had occurred he was being shaken from his bed in the small cabin he shared with several of the field hands…

Rumors were rampant at the time of the owners death about his poor treatment of his slaves and family. Tales of his cruelty, murderous rages, and vile business practices ran about the community, giving rise to the widely accepted, yet whispered, conclusion that the marks around his neck were placed there by a relative seeking to wrest control of the empire before his reputation cost them the lifestyle of comfort they had grown accustomed to.

A high school has been built on land that once saw the forced labor of slaves and the death of one of the men that drove them, a fitting outcome, yet I have to question the logic of building the school around a cemetery on the same piece of property… Sitting next to a parking lot, gym, and ball field, the old cemetery stands as a silent guardian of whisperings of years long gone, hiding its secrets, buried long ago with the occupants, for generations…

Recent years have come to find many strange occurrences taking place around this hallowed ground. There are numerous accounts of the strange smell of bacon and coffee being encountered at odd hours of the day, sounds being heard coming from the cemetery in the evening, and strange lights are being seen outside of the school when only a few of the employees are on hand.

The first account I heard of this is rife with controversy, including even a purported cover up by local officials… A few years ago there were reports of school buses parked over night in the lot next to the cemetery being vandalized. Eggs and milk were among the items discovered to be thrown on the buses, but the vandalism included the inside of the buses as well, often people were called in to clean eggs from the seats of the vehicles before they could be sent out on the morning routes. Deciding to catch the miscreants responsible, video cameras were installed in secret around the property… What was seen on the recordings was quietly covered up and not discussed by the administration.

Several local administrators watched in silence as a strange orb of light was seen circling the busses at night. Upon first glance they thought they had caught the culprits and waited patiently for them to reveal themselves in the lights of the parking lot. They were astounded to see the light then begin to rise and pass through the bus… The orb of ghostly light was not indeed a flashlight as they had first thought. Several minutes passed after they saw the light fade out. They gasped when it slowly appeared over the hood of the last bus it was seen near. I was told by an eyewitness that a few people left the room when milk was then thrown on the bus.

This wasn’t discussed by the witnesses and a strange code of silence surrounds the events. Recently local residents have reported seeing lights at night near the cemetery. People I know have been there to witness the events, they saw no lights, but did hear several strange calls come from the cemetery between midnight and one in the morning, upon investigation, no one was found inside the cemetery.

The portion of the story that I’m currently digging into is the increasing number of reports being made about a child’s laughter being heard in the parking lot and surrounding area by some of the employees when they first arrive in the morning. I spoke with a member of staff who told me that, as she approached a door that was propped open it slammed in front of her and she distinctly heard this same laughter going down the hall and thought that a student had shut the door on her. She investigated when she went in and found that she was alone in that section of the school…

“I was a bit disturbed when I got out of the car because several people had mentioned to me that they had smelled bacon and eggs cooking when they were walking across the parking lot, I never encountered that… until that morning the door shut. I kept looking for someone else because I felt like I was being watched, but I didn’t see anyone. When the door slammed in front of me I got mad because I heard a girl laughing.. I threw the door open and looked down the hall, but there was nobody around. By the time I made to the other end of the building I was so scared I was ready to go home… there just wasn’t anyone there…”
