Snake walking sticks, Wood spirits & a Hand sculpture...

With warmer weather a few weeks away it is now time to build up the inventory that has been depleted from gift making and shows that took place over the holidays. This of course means late hours. Tonight I started a couple of projects that I think will work out wonderfully.

The first up is another version of the snake walking stick I did a while back.

Next up is a piece of cedar I have begun carving. I think this work will make one of the best walking sticks I have done thus far.

Added into the mix was the dreaded "school project"... Patrick informed me that he is working on a paper for psychology on tactile senses. He decided that he wanted to make a hand to represent the sense of touch... As we all know when it comes to school projects mom and dad usually are the ones who put the effort in... I had no problem working on this, as sculpting with clay is my preferred medium, and one that I have not worked with for far too long. I rather enjoyed making this life sized hand, it was an excellent distraction... I can't wait until its dry so that I can sand it down and see the finished piece.. I just wish I had a Kiln...

Christmas, a tonsillectomy, some snow, and a birthday...

James was getting sick, all the time. He was always suffering with ear infections, sore throats, colds... first one thing then another. Julie took him to the doctor and the discussion ensued. He needed to have his tonsils and adenoids out. Much debate followed and the decision was made, date arranged, and ball set in motion.

On the 28th of December he went in at 6:30 in the morning and had them removed.. He also had his eardrums pierced and ears cleaned out since the swelling was causing them to be unable to drain. He was home by 12:30 that day and his camp was set. A makeshift bed was all ready for him, plenty of liquids, meds and ice cream was on hand.... We had been told by doctors, nurses and countless survivors that he would be sleeping until further notice...

They never met James...

Once he got in the door he announced that he wanted to play his new video game he had gotten from Santa. He spent the rest of the afternoon sitting in the floor playing video games and calling for gatorade slushies. He was just unstoppable. His voice sounded like a cross between a member of the lollipop guild and carl from slingblade...

We kept him hydrated and waited for all this magical, recuperative sleep to kick in... He had just had Christmas, a week of vacation, and an operation and still was showing no sign of slowing down. The child never rests at all. He was flitting from his newly acquired love of legos to chasing the dogs in full battle fatigues armed to the teeth, to playing Scooby Doo's grand adventure on his gaming system, to asking what every third word was in every goosebump book ever written, to bouncing off the walls from being locked inside all week... He was a bit groggy here & there, but still never slowed up a bit.

In the ensuing couple of weeks he went full bore with his birthday in going to one of his favorite places to eat, Golden Corral ( god help me... I hate the food trough of the polyestered lard ass masses), to having a party a couple of days later and then going out for catfish at another of his favorite places, Sprayberry's barbecue, with a bunch of the family.. all while talking nonstop and searching all over for the latest in armament and fashion... He then had a day of ice and snow and has been fussing nonstop about his lack of being able to go outside...

Tonight I picked him up from school, grabbed some things for dinner, and headed home where he promptly jumped on the computer, then the legos, then the dogs, then in Julies lap back on the computer... then he walked over to me and told me was "Worn out.." and crawled up onto my lap, grabbed a blanket and ordered me to rock.... then he told me that he loved me and went soundly to sleep...

It's crazy how that one moment in time can make all the stress from the past few weeks simply melt away....
